People value feeling valued. A quick note written to a team member to acknowledge their contribution can go a long way. This can be especially powerful after a big win or during a tough project.

It can be easy to overlook this, because after all, that is why they are being paid right? Even so, the person receiving the note will be more inspired and more loyal to the team.

It is not enough to simply assist your employees with work issue. Great leaders

As leaders, we are focused on building high performance teams that kick butt and take names, but great leaders know they must go further. Great leaders get to know their people on a personal level, and even go so far as to assist them personally.

Several years ago I took a few months off work to take care of a sick family member in another state. When I returned it I had a hard time getting a place to rent. I was being turned down due to the gap in employment with the reason that it looked like I was not stable. The CEO of my company heard of my struggles and personally visited the manager of the place I really wanted to live. His assurances got me an apartment the same day. We are no longer at the same company, but to this day I would still bend over backward for him.

Get to know your team at a personal level and you will inspire confidence, respect, and loyalty in them.

What are you doing to get to know your team members?

Never shoot down an idea from your team!

An idea may not make sense to you, but your team has boots on the ground. They are daily in the trenches. They see things you do not. The idea may not make sense at first but there is always a reason someone suggests a change. Instead of shooting it down, dig into it. Ask lots of questions. Seek understanding. Be curious. Really consider what they are saying and how it could fit into the overall picture.

To help it fit into the bigger picture suggest small tweaks in the form of encouraging questions. Such as, “This sounds really interesting. I am wondering, what would it look like if we slightly altered the idea with… [insert tweak]?”

Allowing and encouraging your team to bring you ideas will create a sense of openness, trust, and respect. All of which are key building blocks of a strong team and leader.

Be an enabler.

Do not be the roadblock preventing your team from moving forward. Do whatever it takes to enable your team to move forward with ideas that will push the company forward.

What are you doing to get ideas flowing from your team?
